Tabbed. The Future of Dining is Here.

About Project

In a world where time is of the essence and personal communication is evolving, the traditional dining experience is facing challenges such as prolonged waiting times for bills and the need for seamless payment solutions among friends or colleagues. This case study delves into the development of "Tabbed," a mobile application designed to streamline the dining process and enhance user experiences.

Tabbed represents a significant leap forward in the dining industry by addressing common challenges and enhancing user experiences. With its geolocation-based automation and user-friendly features, Tabbed aims to revolutionize the way people dine out, making the process more efficient, enjoyable, and conducive to meaningful personal interactions.

Problem Statement

Extended Waiting Times

The conventional dining experience often involves waiting for the waiter to bring the bill, causing delays for customers who are ready to leave.

Time for Personal Communication

In an era of rapid technological advancements, face-to-face communication is diminishing. The need for offline communication is becoming a privilege rather than the norm.

Payment Hassles within Groups

Splitting bills among a group often requires additional steps, like transferring money through third-party services, causing inconvenience and potential delays.

Solution

Seamless In-App Experience

Tabbed App was designed to work seamlessly during restaurant visits without causing distractions. Intuitive interface ensures users can focus on their dining experience rather than navigating through a complex application.

Geolocation-Based Automation

Tabbed utilizes geolocation technology to detect when users are in a restaurant. Automatically opens a tab upon entering a restaurant, streamlining the ordering and payment process.

Automatic Account Closure

When users leave the restaurant, the application intelligently detects their departure through geolocation. Alternatively, users have the option to manually close the tab within the application. This feature ensures a hassle-free experience, saving time for busy individuals who prioritize efficiency.

Role & Process

  1. A team comprising two designers and a UX art director collaborated on the project.

  2. Particularly crucial was the consideration of implementing technical capabilities, placing a specific emphasis on refining the onboarding process and seamlessly incorporating essential feature setups like geolocation and payment methods into the app experience.

  3. The process involved standard application development challenges, including researching scarce or tangentially related projects, sorting features, establishing information architecture, and creating a cohesive visual system.

  4. Given the MVP nature of the project, emphasis was placed on rapid development with straightforward solutions for a quick launch.

  5. As a designer, my responsibilities encompassed collaborating with a second designer on the comprehensive application design. I took the initiative to propose the concept of large typography and a simple composition to facilitate quick information absorption, aligning with my vision of the application as a "one-action-app" to prioritize efficiency in user interactions.

Results

  1. In just two months, the team adeptly progressed through all research and design phases, smoothly transitioning the finalized layouts into the development stage, and successfully launching an MVP.

  2. Envisioning a significant market shift as the new app introduces innovative features, aligning with the trend of automation seen in daily experiences like staff-less stores.

  3. Anticipating a reduction in operational costs for restaurants partnering with Tabbed by leveraging streamlined processes and efficient payment solutions.

  4. Given the MVP nature of the project, emphasis was placed on rapid development with straightforward solutions for a quick launch.
